Chapter Thirty-Five

Mom has finished packing their bags and started on one for me, so I join her while Dad and Barrett escort our intruders to the car. Dad must be feeling cheeky because Harold struts out the opened front door whistling a jaunty tune while Leo tries to stay as far away from him as they’ll allow. I’m not sure what the big deal is. Someone like him has probably seen plenty of dead bodies. What’s the difference if they’re up and walking? They’re still dead.

“Honey, I packed your alternate IDs and credit cards, and more cash. I pulled one of your daddy’s sets for Barrett. The ID doesn’t look like him, obviously, but at least the cards will work. Cash is in this pocket.”

“Thanks, Mom,” I sigh. I’m so thankful my family has always had a bug-out plan, but I hate that it’s come to this. Having magic means there’s always a chance of being discovered. Being discovered can lead to persecution, hatred, or any other of a number of things. This has led the council to encourage all members to create at least one alternate ID with everything we could need from library cards to passports. One of our members works for the government and also has powers related to creation and illusion, so they’ve been making them for the last twenty years. Even though they’re flawless, my dad never leaves anything to chance. Because of his paranoia, he got us additional sets the council doesn’t even know about. We’ll use these now since the Head CUNT knows of the ones the council issued.

“Are you ok?” she asks me, concern lining her face.

“I mean, I’m irritated. But we’ll get through it.”

She moves to the side of my bed to take a seat, patting the space next to her so I’ll join her. “I’m glad you’re doing relatively ok. I know this situation is crazy, but you’re ready for it. I was talking about having a mate, though. I know you were both blindsided, but the positive is that you seemed to figure out you liked each other before you found out.”

I laugh, thinking of the weeks where we were drawn to each other but couldn’t admit it to ourselves, so we kept butting heads. “It took a while, yeah. But we got there. I’m glad to hear the fact that we’re mates isn’t the reason for how we feel. I still want to figure out a way to get into the library to do some research myself. I believe you, but this is important. It feels like I need to know as much as possible about every aspect of it.”

I absolutely trust my parents, but I’m also the kind of person who needs to see for myself. Maybe they’ll have some information about Barrett and his absorbing the corruption from me. I’m still worried he’ll get sick or something, but he looks great.

“So, you know how we talked about how the mates have powers that fit or work together?” I ask hesitantly.
